Physics Made Simple : Wave Motion and Simple Harmonic Motion

Wave Motion

Wave motion in a medium occurs due to generated disturbance that causes the constituent particles in the medium to repeat thier to and fro motion about their mean positions in same interval of time and this disturbance is passed from one end of medium to the other end.

Simple Harmonic Motion:

The particles of a medium play an important role in generation of waves. They execute a special type of wave motion called as Simple Harmonic Motion.

Example 1 :

If we put some water in a small container having water, now we dip one end of a pencil at the edge of water container and move the pencil up and down vertically after placing small pieces of cardboard on surface of water at equal intervals,we will observe each piece moves about its mean position up and down as the water waves pass through them.

They are not displaced from their original positions.

This type of motion displaced by pieces of cardboard is termed as Vibratory Motion.

Further more, the pieces do not vibrate together, but they vibrate at their own positions one after the other.
