Computer studies Made Simple : Internet

Internet:

Internet is a collection of millions of computers around the world that are connected to one another
It is a global network of computers.

These computers are connected through various types of communication links such as:

1.                     1.          Phone lines
       2.    Fibreoptics lines
       3.    Satellites
       4.    Wireless connections.

Internet is used to find information on the computers called hosts or servers.

These computers use a common protocol called TCP/IP for communication.

TCP/IP means Transmission control protocol / Internet protocol.

Each computer connected to the internet can act as a host.

A host computer provides information to the people.

Uses of Internet:

It helps people find information about books, encycopedias, magazines etc.

It can help one find knowledge on any topic.

As a result of internet ,the world has become global village.

Address Schemes:

Each computer on the internet has a unique address.

There are two types of addressing schemes on the internet:

1.IP Addressing:

This is  unique number given to a computer connected on the internet.

IP means internet protocol. This address is a 32 bit number.

An example of IP address is :

132.42.133.28

A server on the internet has a static IP address.

Whenever a computer connects to the internet,it will get an IP address by Internet Service Provider (ISP):

2.DNS Address / Domani Name System:

Domain name refers to names assigned to servers that can easily be read by humans.

This is useful because IP addresses are difficult to remember.

A domain name hence consists of text instaed of numbers.

Example:

www.google.com is a human readable name.

The domain represents the institution that used the addresses.

Example:

.com is a domain used by commercial organizations.

.org is a domain used by non-profit organizations.

.net is used by network providers.

.edu id used by educational institutions.
