Dermatology Made Simple : Rahses

Rashes:

Generally speaking, rahses maybe classified as being from inside or outside.

Examples of Inside or endogenous rashes include:

Atopic Eczema.

Drug Rashes

Psoriasis

Examples of  Outside or exogenous rashes include :

Fungal infections.

Contact Ddermatitis.

HISTORY OF RECURRENT EPISODE:

In case of history of recurrent episode, this may be due to atopic eczema due to a patients”s constitutional tendency or contact dermatitis due to a regular exposure to a causative agent.

OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS AFFECTED:

If several members of a family are affected by a skin rash together, think of a contagious condition such as scabies.

Similarly an skin condition with a familial tendency can cause similar presentation such as Atopic Eczema.

Symmetry:

Usually, endogenous skin rashes are symmetrical such as psoriasis.

Distribution:

It is important to evaluate the distribution and location of the rash.

Rashes on sun exposed areas are due to sensitivity to sun light

HOW SKIN DISEASES AFFECT A PERSON/CONCERNS OF PATIENT AND EFFECT ON ADL:

It is important to evaluate how the patient reacts to skin disease.

For example a patient with severe psoriasis may be unbothered while someone with a small rash maybe very anxious.

A person may become anxious that the rash maybe due to cancer or underlying disease and it is vital the patients be reassured and plan of further action be discussed with them adequately.

It is important to give counselling in cases where an allergen at work environment maybe causing the rash that the affected person may need to consider change of occupation.

Where applicable the patient should be advised to avoid aggravating factor for the rash.

The patient will be anxious to know whether the rash canbe cured or not.
